11th Bengal Lancers 'Probyn's Horse' - British Officer in Indian Full Dress, c1890
Officers sometimes had to deal with Indian princes who judged a man on the opulence of his dress. The 11th was the most flamboyant of all the cavalry regiments in it's use of gold embroidery (see Indian Full Dress). This uniform was inspired by the full dress uniform adopted by Probyn in the early 1860s (see Probyn in Full Dress). British officers wore this style from the late 1880s although the Indian officers had a plainer style until c1905 when they were permitted to wear the same as British officers.
